Does your modem require a crossover cable? Some do, even in spite of the ports on the other end being auto detecting and switching. I have run into that before.

Cable modem plugs into WIFI Router/ situation normal/ I have a friend a new switcher who comes over on Sundays for some Mac tutoring I use a cable from 1 of the 4 WIFI router ports to give him Ethernet with no issues.

Maybe there's an OS issue.
Run the Disk Utility, verify the disk and if it doesn't find anything wrong then reinstall the last OS update using the combo updater. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
