"UPS My Choice members will get phone, e-mail or text alerts notifying them a day before package arrival and get a four-hour window for the delivery. They also will have the option to authorize electronically the release of packages needing a signature. For a $5 transaction fee, they can reroute a package to another delivery address or have it delivered to the nearest The UPS Store.
UPS My Choice Premium Membership costs $40 a year. It provides all the benefits of a regular UPS My Choice membership, plus members get access to an online delivery calendar showing the status of UPS home deliveries. Premium members also are given a two-hour confirmed delivery window. A $5 transaction fee is charged only when the package is delivered successfully within the two-hour commitment."

So they've created a paid service level for things that should already be basic amenities?
I wish you could tell definitively when ordering something who will be handling the shipping, so you can choose a vendor accordingly.

I agree. They're trying to squeeze us for everything nowadays.

Hi everyone,
No small package carrier offers all of the benefits included in the "My choice" program as a part of their basic services. None. Most don't offer even just some of the "My choice" services at all. It's wishful thinking to say these benefits in the "My choice" package should be a part of the normal basic services provided by these carriers. Maybe someday. In actuality, UPS, Fedex and similar carriers offer now for free many services that you had to pay for previously, i.e. basic proof of delivery.
Personally, I'd sign up for the "My choice" benefits in a heartbeat if I didn't have the option of having packages delivered to my office. That or I'd be renting a box at a local UPS Store or similar store so I'd have a place that can receive package for me. One of those boxes will definitely cost more than $40 per year. I think of them in the same way I think of Amazon Prime. Nifty benefits for a fair price. As with Amazon Prime, if UPS's "My choice" program is successful, I wouldn't be surprised to see UPS expand it and competitors to offer something similar to it.

Robert,
Not quite true. You can rhave a package rerouted with either UPS or FedEx now and you have to get the sender to initiate it, but there's no charge.
The other "benefits" are artificial-- there's nothing about any of them that would cost UPS an additional dime over the way things happen currently.

Black,
True, which is why I typed my post carefully. The other benefits are definitely not artificial. I ship with UPS every day and receive packages for both business and personal reasons from UPS, Fedex and other carriers regularly. Daily, usually. For example, features such as a 2 or 4 hour window are absolutely not artificial. Wishful thinking on the part of UPS, in my opinion, but far from artificial. You bet UPS is going to make you pay for benefits like that.

The last time I had something delivered by FedEx, they sent me an eMail that said I could have the package delivered to the nearest FedEx office if I wanted. I didn't have it done, so I don't know if they would have charged me for this service or not.
