Talk about Bag of Hurt - Ultraviolet Video DRM!
#1
Just got Harry Potter 7 part 2 as a BR/DVD/Digital copy package. What's new is the digital copy came with this new Flixster/Ultraviolet 'locker' system. [Note: the same package for HP7part1 purchased last year gave you two options for digital copy, including iTunes. Quick download, in iTunes - and can be shared in the household as a digital hub via iTunes.]

New this year is Ultraviolet DRM! No longer an iTunes option.

What can I say? It was MUCH easier and faster to just rip the DVD with handbrake. Indeed, I was done with the conversion before I was done with getting my Flixster and Ultraviolet (yes, two DIFFERENT accounts) registrations finished, two different new software installed, before logging in and starting the official download.

Then - the Flixster app just dumps the DRM mp4 file into my 'movies' folder. No organization, nothing.

This idea - to make a digital 'locker' where all of your digital copies can be accessed via computer, mobile devices, etc - could be good. But the current implementation is not just a PITA, it's really terrible.

So long as Handbrake is there for us, I'll just keep legal with my personal license and let the formal digital copy wars get settled.

I will say in my best Andy Rooney impression - doesn the 'D' in 'DVD' stand for 'D igital?!' If I have a DVD, don't I already have a digital copy?!

I never bother with the digital copy. I just rip the Blu-ray and convert with Handbrake to get a HD quality m4v file that I put in iTunes.

What's your favorite Blu-ray ripping tool?

I tell ya. If you want your computer to "feel" faster, rip and encode about a dozen blu rays. Then when you're done, rip and encode about a dozen DVDs. Your computer will "feel" about 10 times faster.
