Can't sleep, but dead tired
#1
I am out in the Heartland, not feeling benevolent toward air travel in general (I felt like I had been worked over by goons by the time I arrived at my destination) or toward Delta and Orbitz in particular.

Delta cancelled my outgoing flights on both ends of the trip, and put me on flights that leave an hour earlier. Today that meant I would be getting up at 4 AM and sitting in Detroit for two and a half hours for my connecting flight, rather than an hour and a half of waiting and another hour of sleep. On the way back, 4 AM again, and THREE hours sitting in Detroit waiting for my connecting flight rather than two.

I booked the trip through Orbitz, and didn't give any thought to their little automated travel updates. So this morning at 3 AM, I was very surprised when my cell phone rang and woke me up: Orbitz calling to tell me that my 6 AM flight would leave on time. I was not able to get back to sleep.

I cannot fathom why I'm wide awake now after fighting to stay awake in the late afternoon and evening.

I'm really glad I don't fly more often.

If you are tired but can't sleep:

(1) Place a hot washcloth over your eyes and forehead and let it cool down. Twice or more.

(2) Sit upright in a posture that encourages your shoulders to settle, sink, and relax.

When your eyes and shoulders relax, sleep comes a lot closer.
