Good news/okay news with daughter's new MacBook.

First the good news. We went back today with the receipt from yesterday's purchase and picked up a 2gig Nano, and they were happy to re-ring up the sale on the same new receipt so we could go for the rebate. Very nice folks at his particular (newly opened) Apple Store. We've dealt with three different sales people and each has been most friendly and accommodating.

On to the okay news. We figured we might as well try to use firewire target mode and/or Migration Assistant to transfer User info from the Graphite over to the new MacBook. Let's just say it was a bit of an exercise in futility. All we wanted to transfer over from the old computer was her User folder, but never got to a point where that was an option. Spinning beach ball city. It said it "may take 30 seconds", but after several minutes we couldn't force quit anything and ended up physically shutting down. Long story short, I ended up adding the MacBook to the network and dragging User files from the Graphite to the MacBook. It's all working okay now.

Also, during setup, the assumption seems to be that you're configuring a wireless connection and it took a little exploring to get to plain old ethernet. In hindsight, it may have been quicker to do everything manually. All's well now, though. And after re-authorizing songs previously downloaded and fixing a few preferences, it's getting set up the way she wants it.

It is a beautiful machine.

I woulda thot plain ol' target mode woulda been faster then over the network. Just skip migration assistant and copy of the user files.

But in the end, it's just a little more time. Glad to here you got there.

I played with a MacBook for the first time today at the Houston Apple Store. I really like it. My Pismo is looking over her shoulder...
