Dead iBook G3 HD - replace to ebay or part out?
#1
The hard drive on my iBook G3 600MHz died a little while ago. I've decided to sell the little guy in an effort to save money for a MacBook Pro (Still have 2 other machines).

I'm curious what people think about replacing the HD (I'm guessing $50-$70 for a 40 to 60GB HD) and selling the machine as a full-working piece or taking the thing apart and parting it out?

If I part it out, how much should I break it down, or do I just sell it as a whole piece minus the hard drive (which I'll pull to make sure it's really dead)?

I think that if you list the iBook fully working as a BIN auction, it'll be worth more than the sum of its parts. Most of the parts are worthless. The battery, AC, Screen, Motherboard, DC board, keyboard, and Top Case are about all you'll sell (at a reasonable price).

Placing a BIN on it, selling at the going rate or just a little higher, and putting on a very detail description... much better. (assumes fixing it)

I'd replace the HD with a used 10-30 GB drive.

I was going to say pretty much what Grim did, plus the following: you can find a 40-60GB drive, used or refurb, for less than what you mentioned, on the LEM Swap List or ebay...

Just remember that it's a PITA, fiddly job, taking about 3 hours unless you've done it before. How much is your 3 hours worth to you?
