Font question, redux...
#1
Here's the original post:

http://forums.macresource.com/read/1/112...msg-112169

... I didn't get any useful responses to this. So... does anyone know either or both:

1) If there is a substitute good font to use for this (I like very much what I am using now, "Female and Male Symbols")

2) If there isn't a good substitute font I can use, how about a way to fix the font I'm using now?

Why not just bypass Font Book activation and manually drop it into ~/Library/Fonts?

johnc, I just installed it in Font Book, ignoring the errors. So it IS installed. It's just that, according to Font Book, installing a font with errors can cause unpredictable system behavior, crashes, etc. So either I should find another font, or figure out a way to fix this one.

FontDoctor X can't fix it.

Font Book flags it as a Font Name Table problem (could be worse).

Open Word with the font active, and you'll see what's most likely the result of a Font Name Table problem in the app's font menu:

On the other hand, InDesign CS shows its "proper" name:

TextEdit (at least on my system) doesn't seem to recognize it as being installed (probably because of a much tighter integration with Font Book). SimpleText (the version that came with Panther's Developer Tools) sees it, though.

Unless you find a suitable replacement, you might consider activating it when you wish to use it, and deactivating it afterwards (if you're worried about system instability, although I think the severity of the problem varies depending on the particular application being used to access the font). Of course, YMMV.

Have you tried printing with it? It exports to PDF (from InDesign) with no problem whatsoever.

Hi johnc,

Thanks much for trying FontDoctor.

I have no problems whatsoever accessing it when it's activated, using a few different apps; I haven't tried printing with it yet, but printing to a PDF has been fine. No crashes (yet), either.

Ideal would be either to fix it (maybe using another app?) or find another font that has the same symbols... unfortunately, it is a very useful font, and I'd prefer to have something that doesn't require periodic activation/deactivation.

The "font name table", isn't that something fixable?

How about running the font through a shareware or demo version of a font editor? When I have troublesome fonts I open and re-export them from Fontographer (still using the ancient OS 9 version), that usually fixes it.
