I just found out about this myself, had no idea it existed. If you want 1080 video on the cheap with the ability to do shallow depth of field this may be a fun low cost answer with a Canon T1i.

Improved audio, focus peeking, time lapse, higher bit rate, manual exposure, too much to list.
T1i refurb for $434. You can probably sell the kit lens $50-75 for the lens and get other lenses.

This might be good for tinkering types like me or students.

Just curious, what does this do for us T3i owners?

Check out the chart under 600D, it adds a whole lot. Too much to list.
The T2i s the 550D and the T1i is the 500D.

This looks cool, thanks. I just got a T3i here at work. I intended it just for still photography and had ordered a Vixia HF M41 for product videos at a great price of $400. from CDW.
Turns out CDW ran out of stock on the M41 and will get no more so I'm stuck with the T3i for video for the moment.

The firmware hack should add a bunch of camcorder related features. You may not need the camcorder after you run through all that it adds.

I think I probably will still need a camcorder as my design assistant is shooting the videos. Photography/ videography is not her strong suite so I have to make it as simple as possible. I'm looking at the VIXIA HF M50 now but will wind up paying more at this point.
Yeah, it doesn't autofocus at all.
