Thanks, Bill.

I assumed it would be a closed area; however, I wasn't sure about any other possible consequences. Can't break what's already broken, but can't afford to break anything else.

Just sounds to me like the spindle assembly hasn't retracted and that the edge of the disk you're trying to insert is hitting it. It's a pull job, and has been from the start. Sorry, lot of work. External is good, but it's also good to hve everything inside working too.
