did you check Activity Monitor - System Memory tab?

4 GB or 3 GB by the pie chart?

I think...THINK...it may have had something to do with the yahoo account I set up in Mail. I found that it was always trying to send and receive something and also filling up a "recovered messages from yahoo" folder with 1 message over and over and over. Over 350gb worth. So I deleted the account. Deleted the folder. Opening that 375gb on the hard drive and it actually seems to run cooler. And thus, no fans. Very weird indeed.

Will play with it more tonight. I have been trying to get my wife to clear out the 500gb hd in order to transition to a smaller SSD and no matter what she deleted she always had less and less free space. It turned out to be that errant yahoo folder. The whole system is noticeably faster now. Not new mac fast, but relatively speaking, it's much faster.

I did not check the activity monitor when the fans were running constantly. No idea why. Duh. But I do know that the "About this Mac" and System Profiler both reported 4gb of RAM. Which I thought was odd b/c I was fully expecting to only "see" 3.3gb when i upgraded.

Maybe it's just a mutant.
