I learned in my back packing first aid class how to use moleskin. First, it is not a band-aid, do not cover the blister. One should cut a patch larger than the blister and then cut out the center that would be over the blister and apply. This will protect the blister from futher chafeing allowing air to reach the blister and dry it out and speed heeling. Think, a protective donut around the blister. I am a big fan of the two sox system (silk/wool) as others have described and would suggest always taking at least an extra pair of sox.
