Question re: "Find my iPhone"
#1
A friend leaves me voice mail this morning, with question. He just installed the iPhone update (though he didn't say which one) and noticed that "Find my iPhone" was enabled, and he hadn't enabled it. His question: Is it enabled by default?

He's paranoid (for valid reasons) that a suspicious family member (spouse) might have enabled it. I honestly don't know the answer, so I thought I'd ask here.

He's been a bad boy, yes. I remain neutral, since I'm friend with both he and spouse. But would like to answer his technical question.

Enabled by default - no

Paranoid? Just because they really are out to get you doesn't mean you aren't paranoid.

I would definitely stay completely out of a situation like that.

...and in answer to your question, there's an option to set up findmyiphone when you go through the initial iPhone setup. Maybe your friend set it up at the time but didn't remember that part.

It's all tied to an iTunes account (or Apple ID), so does he share an iTunes account with another person? If not, then he's fine and nothing to worry about unless his password has been compromised. He can easily change his password and also easily disable it via the app or settings.

Mine was enabled after the 5.0 upgrade. Easy to go in setting and turn off, although it is one of the most useful apps I have.
