iPad mini vs. Retina iPad - I'm going back to Retina (but keeping the mini)
#1
First, some reading material:

Anyway, I've decided to go back to a retina iPad (instead of the iPad mini and instead of a Macbook Air). Though I love everything about the mini in terms of size, weight, portability, "palm"-ability, etc. I just couldn't get past the non-Retina screen. All our other iDevices are Retina, so each time I used the mini, the lack of Retina was very noticeable. Having to pinch and zoom web pages because, (a) the text was too small and (b) the text was too fuzzy (for me) just became annoying in the end.

I found myself picking up the mini to use and then after a few minutes, putting it back down and just using my iPhone 5 to do whatever it was I was trying to do on the mini.

Yes, going back to a big clunker iPad will be an adjustment in and of itself, but I'm going to give it a shot.

Got a good deal on an iPad 3 32GB with 5 months still left on the warranty (paid $100 less for it than what I sold the exact same model for 2 months ago when I decided to keep the mini) and restoring it right now from my mini's backup.

My plan is to use the iPad 3 for my personal use and the iPad mini for family use. Let's see how it goes.

Oh and, yes, going from the mini to the iPhone may seem counterintuitve, but somehow, my eyes felt better looking at smaller but sharper text rather than a bit larger but fuzzier text. I don't know...it's really just a very subjective thing I guess.

And, in terms of an iPad vs the Air, I decided that I don't really need another full-fledged Mac when my Mac mini does everything I need it to, albeit only when I'm sitting at my desk.

One thing is for sure. You are awash in technological devices. You are geared up.

Hopefully, Apple won't force you to make any new decisions for at least 4 months.

I love the size and weight of the Mini, and I don't have any difficulty with its text display. Honestly, in the store I didn't see a noticeable difference between it and the iPad Retina. Of course, Apple did not have them displayed next to each other, so side-by side comparison wasn't an option.

But for certain things, I'd love to have a bigger screen. I'm trying out a text editor called Textastic, and finding it difficult to deal with the row of symbol keys at the top of its keyboard, even with the Mini in landscape mode. Each key in this top row contains FIVE characters, and to access four of the five, you have to press and briefly hold a corner. It is NOT easy. I can just a teensy bit imagine getting a full-size iPad for certain things.

I have to agree with you and I'm not about to carry a retina around with me just so I can say "this mini sure isn't as good as a retina". Love my mini!
