Is there such a thing as a good solid, 2.5 inch enclosure...

A) Yes. I'd like a case. Mostly for transport
B) I've had several of those harness dealies over the years. I've never ever had one work reliably. And by that I mean I got them to work maybe 1 out of 50 tries. Those things, IMHO, are a huge YMMV. And my mileage sucked.
Well, I hooked this one up to an old 320GB IDE and didn't have a single issue. It lit up right away, popped up on the desktop in seconds, was able to access the info on the HD, and ejected properly. It also has all the connections for SATA, etc. I have old enclosures I can use to cover the old HD if I need to. But this adapter works very well for me.

And I don't disagree with you. I have had zero luck with them. I've purchased several over the years. Different kinds from different vendors. In every case, I've returned them and gotten another equally as useless replacement. Tried on all shapes and sizes of drives that otherwise perform flawlessly in an external enclosure. I cannot explain it. They simply do not work for me...at all.

I have a few of these and they are extremely nice. SIIG has always built no frills products that work extremely reliably and have good Mac support, they also are relatively inexpensive.
