I think it's funny and lots better than the old filter where you had to guess what the offending word was.

I have been burned buy having to guess what the offending word was too. If this filter removes that annoyance that it is a a step forward.

FYI, the only post in this thread that has been removed is one that included a screenshot of banned words to get around the posting of censored words.

This list was put into place specifically to address issues and posts that have been reported by forum members. It was not done for any reason other than that, and to attempt to keep this forum "Family Friendly"

Posting of profanity, including words that are s p a c e d out is in violation of the terms of service, inappropriate content.

Please, we're trying to keep this appropriate for all ages.

Thank you!

Thanks for the reply. On this specific issue, this is news to me. There's been lots of stuff posted here over the years that the previous mods wouldn't remove... stuff that wasn't "safe for work" even. I think it's important to provide the reasoning for changes in moderation, perceived or real, so people can get an idea what's going on.

That said, some of the words added to the list do seem to be a bit overboard - eg stroke - ?

absolutely agree. i imagine the list is editable. some of what is being censored is just absurd.
family friendly' depends upon the family and the context. the censorware isn't taking meaning and tone into consideration at all.

i'm not totally anti-censorship. i used to censor my son's web surfing. got pretty amusing when i had to put Cumming, GA on the exception list.

Edit: sigh. see what i mean. now everyone run and google a map of Georgia for town possibilities.

The first performance at this years Academy Awards included as its most frequent word one that the forum now bans (colloquial for breasts). Can't even use a popular smiley anymore (shaking your bottom).

The new forbidden word list seems a bit extreme.

As far as being a family friendly forum, it was and now is a bit less so depending on who is defining family friendly. Perhaps whoever decides this has undergone a religious conversion or has a new preacher at his/her house of worship. The list certainly doesn't reflect the vernacular of today's teens, even those most would consider very moral.

it reflects the 1950's perspective of a conservative christian family's kids that my son used to play with. he had to be careful not to say dang or darn.

oh good, THOSE seem to be okay.

No, thank you for the explanation and rationale.

That being said, I'm just glad that I can still smurf the brains out of anyone, anytime I feel like it.

Anyone that would like to review the censor list, and offer suggestions of what words in the list are appropriate (and use them properly in a sentence as an example), please feel free to PM your preferred email address to send it to.

Seriously. We didn't make this up on our own. It was derived (and pruned of some very mild words) from this: https://github.com/snipe/banbuilder/zipball/master

There are about 800 words. While some included words may have an approved context use, they are in there because of an inappropriate usage and the potential for reported posts that could contain them, and these words are not typically used in the correct context.

Please do not use this as an excuse to test boundaries, or attempt to circumvent the Terms Of Service agreement. This does nothing to benefit the forum, nor does it help maintain the open stance that has been very much a part of the MacResource forum and made it enjoyable for it's members for so long.

Thank you - all in all this is just an effort to make this place run without interaction or moderation required.
