Whenever I check out a new digicam, I go straight to http://www.steves-digicams.com , find the review, scroll down to "JUMP TO PAGE:" to the Sample Photos and look for the one that uses full zoom and take a good look.

Of course, my priority is the superzoom.

And this one looks pretty good. There is a fair amount of noise, but no color fringing which seems to be the worst problem for the full zoom shots on these cheap cameras.

I used to use an Olympus 26x zoom back when that was the cutting edge of superzooms and it was pretry good. IS was pretty crappy, but it wasn't dual.

I might consider this for a first DSLR instead of say a D90 plus a lens as much as I'd have a hard time with just one thumb wheel and that viewfinder. Neither are weather sealed.

It's supposed to me a nice camera, dunno about the 18-55, but it would be a start and something to work with at least most of the time.
I've considered it a few times when it has been offered body-only at an even better price point.

I am seeing used D300 for less than $500 and D7000 (both weather sealed) are dropping to below the $700 neighborhood. Watch your local internet classifieds.

Yeah, everyone selling cameras here seem to think their used pampered babies with 15,000+ clicks are worth 10% more than a nikon factory refurb.
I keep looking though.
