I thought the drive-ins solved their sound problem many years ago by broadcasting the sound from a low power FM transmitter so the car's sound system could pick it up. Of course, it would be stereo at best, so no big deal surround sound.

Had a drive in in town until about 4 years ago. I took the kids to see Men in Black 2, my oldest daughter said, "nah-uh, that's just on TV!" she had a good time.
Wife and I went to see "Signs" snuck in some chicken wings and beer, the crescent moon next to the screen made it that much creepier! Miss the drive in!

Loved the loving! Especially during all-night until dawn movie night.

There were four drive-ins within just three miles to four miles from me and not to much more between the farthest of the four.
One by one, they had $2 nights, all you could pack in a car. That was the death knell. Drunken kids showed up, families left. I think the last was gone before the advent of the Betamax. More than the movies, it was the smell of popcorn and hot coffee wafting from the snack bar, playing with Spotty, and Bireley's Orange drink. |
