RadioShack puts iPhone 5s/5c, Galaxy S5 on steep discounts

Today through June 9th, the US branch of RadioShack is running a special in-store discount on Apple's iPhone 5s and 5c, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S5. 5s buyers can get a 16GB model on AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint for free if they bring in a working iPhone 4S, or simply pay $80 -- in either case, a new or upgraded two-year contract is required.

I just upgraded to an iPhone 4S and signed a new two year contract, two weeks ago. Does this promotion mean that I can take that 4S into RS and sign another two year contract and walk out with a 5S ? ? ?

Many of you are mobile phone experts and I value your opinion. The closest RS to me is still quite far. I will try calling once the store opens.

The Apple store has been doing something similar to this for a few weeks now. Trade in a working 4S, walk out with a new 5S for free with new 2 year contract.

I would've done it weeks ago but I don't want to lose my Verizon Wireless unlimited data plan.

I'm starting to realize that the unlimited plan has value to me, but not infinite value. At some point it will be worth the phone upgrade.

But 4S to 5S isn't that point. 4S to 6 might be.

Wait until a coworker is ready to upgrade to an iPhone6 and then buy their old, outdated, used 5S off of him/her as a "favor" for the Gazelle price

So VZW isn't grandfathering anybody?

I don't know where I would go otherwise, but the main reason I've stuck with att is because they grandfather me upgrade after upgrade, since the first 'Phone.

VZW stopped offering new contracts with unlimited data about 2-ish years ago. If you had unlimited data before the cut-off you got to keep it. (grandfathered) But they just don't offer new contracts with it. No new contracts with unlimited data means no new subsidized phones with unlimited data.

I conservatively use about 6-7GB a month. And that's with ZERO video. I commute to work and the office has no WiFi :dunno: The salespeople at VZW tell me straight up that with my data usage it doesn't make sense for me to change my unlimited data plan to anything they currently offer.

Last September, I was in the Houston, TX area. I was at the Apple Store in The Woodlands Mall where the store manager told me I could keep my ATT Unlimited Data plan AND get the subsidized price on the then new iPhone5s. It did require a new two year contract but, said new contract stayed at my $65/month price (450 Anytime minutes with unused minutes "Rolling Over"; 5000 Night & Weekend minutes and NO texts). My bill has stayed at that $65 each month since. In NY, I was told by an ATT rep that, if I paid the FULL price for an iPhone5s, I could keep my Unlimited Data plan. If I wanted the subsidized iPhone5s price, I'd have to give up the Unlimited Data. If you travel to other areas, ask questions; it just might pay off for you.

I went from an Original iPhone and Unlimited ATT Data to an IPhone 5 in spring of 2013, keeping both old phone as toy for my daughter (value near zero) and the unlimited plan!
