Credit card fraud
#1
I got a call from REI today. The woman asked me if I made a purchase to have shipped to a different state. I did not. She cancelled the order.

I checked my account and found a few other purchases totaling about $350. I immediately called American express and cancelled the card. They said they are pending and will have to wait for them to go through before they do more. The woman at american express told me not to worry about it they will handle it as soon as they can.

Any suggestions on what else I should do to protect myself?

Sorry to tell you that this is how my ID theft started. But my case was in the mid 90s - things have changed in your favor since then.

But I got a similar call in 1996(?) - several charges from mail order operations. Cancelled the charges and the card, but the bank suggested that I call the credit bureau agencies to see if there was any suspicious activity. There was... LOTS.

It would be a good idea to call them and see what your options are - I believe a temp suspension of new credit accounts is easy now, but see what they have to say.

I got the same call a couple of years ago on a card I rarely use (hadn't used it in 3 or 4 months).

I called the card company and they killed all the recent charges and issued me a new card, with a new number.

That was the total extent of it.
