My 20 gig color iPod is Dead. Again.
#1
I've had this problem on and off since I got this unit as a gift last Jan. Every once in a while the iPod battery drains and it won't recharge at all. It's been dead as a hammer for three days now even though I have plugged it into every charging device I own for iPods. Tried to do the hard reset, etc. No joy. The charging units charge my wife's plain jane 20 gig unit, no problem.

Nothing will bring it back.

One of the last times this hapened I brought it to an Apple store (hour drive) and had a genius look at it. Of course it flicked on as I drove to the AS. The genius looked at it and said the firmware wasn't up to date and that he'd note my account but he would not exchange it or send it in for service. He was sort of a prick.

This is getting a bit frustrating and I REALLY dont want to drive to the Apple store only to be told "monitor it and we'll note the account" when it comes back from the dead.

Any ideas?

Yep, don't go to the Apple Store.
Have you tried calling Apple?
If they say to take it to the store tell them it is too far.

You have AppleCare on the iPod?

I think a big part of your problem may be that it isn't good to charge down your ipod all the way. You can suck enough juice out of it that it doesn't want to turn on again. Its possible that you'd have this problem with a new ipod.

Ah, the other iPods that we have here seem to have no problem with this treatment. My wife CONSTANTLY wears the battery on hers down to nothing, throws it on the charger and it re-charges, which, as I understand it, is how these devices work.

Sounds like you just got a bad battery.

Go to the Apple care site and look for the link to type in your serial number. It will tell you exactly how your warranty coverage is set up. Getting a repair/replacement is as easy as this:

Apple sends you an empty postage paid box. overnight.

You put the ipod into the box (it even comes with packing tape to seal it)

You drop the box into any DHL drop box

Apple sends your repaired iPod or replacement within a week

I second (or third?) going to deal with Apple over the phone, or on-line.
