Core to the problem is the way Newsstand alerts users when they have new magazines to read. In iOS 6, Newsstand’s home screen icon would automatically refresh whenever a new edition of a periodical was available, giving iOS users a clear indication of when new content was available. That changed in 2013, however, when Apple introduced iOS 7, which ditched the bookshelf style icon for a simpler one that gave no visual cues at all. And the Newsstand app has remained unchanged in iOS 8, the latest version of the operating system.

Does anyone here use Newsstand? For my iOS devices, it has always been one of the annoying icons that I try my best to hide (which is hard because traditionally the icon has been a folder, not an app, and so a folder couldn't exist inside another folder).
P.s. Is Newsstand the most awkward word ever?

It was much ballyhooed but I think Apple has learned the publishing industry is a bag of hurt. Unless they can get traction somehow soon, Newstand will wind up as just another abandoned "neat thing" that never worked out.
For example, why doesn't Yosemite have it? People wouldn't ever read magazines on a Mac, just because iPads exist?

Old media is clawing to protect their revenue stream. Murdoch tried to create a web only newspaper/magazine that folded less than a year later. People pay for paper, but not electrons.

It's where the NYT and Economist live, so yes, i use Newsstand. It's been possible to store Newsstand inside a folder since iOS 7, so that's not been an issue for a while. I don't think it's an awkward word - i've used it my whole life, but until a few years ago it was to refer to the place on the street where you can buy periodicals. It's not like it's a neologism.

There are several Apple Apps that I NEVER use but, can NOT delete to make room for Apps I actually DO use. Incredibly stupid of Apple IMO.
Also stupid, is how Apple trashes your organized desktop, by installing their new App(s) on your Home Page without my permission or any warning.

Vox media and sites like the verge are the future of magazines.
I honestly do not read anything that Newsstand has to offer, but the publishers loved it when it first debuted,

News stand. Put it together and notice the look of the two "s" right next to each other. Has nothing to do with speaking the word or understanding the meaning, I'm referring to how it looks visually.
P.s. Seriously, I've patronized a newsstand in my life. I'm not a Martian transplant.

Science Mag, NYTimes, Sky & Telescope, Science News.
The problem is that the Newssssstand app stinks in that it can't implement hasn't yet copied Zinio's killer feature, IMO: The text-only version of the article. Sometimes I want to see the fully formatted version and sometimes, esp. on an iPhone, I want only the text in a nice, black on white legible column. The Zinio app has this option for every article and it looks great. I miss it in Newwwwwwwwsstand.

That does seem handy. What pubs support Zinio? I guess I could mosey on to their website.
