So what's the status or fate of the iPod touch?

They already have the 5th gen touches (for 2 years now), so it's not something we would buy now.

I think now when they upgrade, I'm going to upgrade to a bigger screen device. Hopefully this will be a 4.7" touch. I'll wait til early next year to see if Apple comes out with it, otherwise I'll start looking into a mini for them.

If you are like me, my family upgrade to their iPod touches were iPhones.

I've got an 8 yr old who loves music and enjoys an old 1GB Shuttle occasionally. I'll probably pick her up a used iPod nano or whatever for Xmas this year before there is no such thing anymore.

She likes iOS games the same as any kid but I've already seen her drop borrowed iPhones too many times. No iPod touch happening there.

My 5th gen Nano can't be improved upon. 16 GB in good condition should be out there in the $60 range.

Ding ding ding. Me too. Well, a mix of devices to be completely honest, but one was in fact an iPhone. Next round won't be an iPhone because we don't have any newer models to pass down, but it may very likely be another phone. My iPod touch swapped for a Nook Color, then Nook Tablet, then Nook HD (all of which I passed to other family members) and now I use a Moto G solely as small tablet. My daughter went from iPod touch to iPhone (in addition to using two of those Nooks).
