My son has an early 2011 15" MBP with the well known video and freezing issues. He has been nursing it along but it is getting too frustrating for him. The local Apple Authorized Service provider charges $60 for diagnosis, then the usual fee for the R&R of the logic board. Does an Apple Sore charge a diagnostic fee? It is 65 miles to the nearest Apple Store but only a few miles to the authorized provider. If the Apple Store does not charge a fee then it is worth my while to drive the distance. The phone system at the Apple Store does not allow for human to human voice communication so I cannot ask them directly.

I would go into an Applestore for sure. At worst it will cost the same, at best you might be surprised.

I took my 2008 MP in couple months ago as after swapping everything I still could not find the problem. After fifteen minutes of various diagnostics they did determine a bad startup disk. No repairs were done, no charges levied.
I do not know if it is the policy or the fact that all work computers are listed under my Apple ID that made the difference...

No charge for diagnosis, plus they can send it for a flat rate repair ($310) that is probably less than the provider's price for an MLB.

I took MBP to the Genius Bar, they said it needed a new hard drive, I forget what the flat rate was - They also replaced the screen, the battery, top part of the case and keyboard at no charge and FedExed it to me in 2 days.
