They just didn't want to be embarrassed by the fact that Apple was worth more than any other stock in the Dow.

Here's a really cool tool to see what the Dow would have looked like if Apple had been in it all along. You can swap Apple in for any company to see the difference.

It has always seemed to me that every time that they add a company to the DJIA the value of the added company either flat-lines, or plummets. Let's hope Apple doesn't do either.
