The card companies are definitely stepping up their fraud prevention.
Stepping up prevention is one thing, but doing it in a useful manner, as Mr. D points out, is really accomplishing something much more useful to the customer, and not just the issuer.
Citi called me yesterday about a transaction. It was a legitimate purchase, less than $200. Makes me wonder if there's been another massive breach that has not been made public. I've been a bit nervous since the Anthem thing.
For such a small (in the scheme of things) purchase, it does make you wonder. But there might have been a random a confluence of factors that just happened to tingle their Spidey sense.

I was declined at a register at my local supermarket. I spent a ridiculously long time trying to call Citi-- turns out there was a text alert at the moment I was declined that gave me the option of clearing the freeze by text. Not sure who they think is holding their phone in their hand watching for incoming texts while trying to pay for groceries, but next time I'll know to check it at least...

Or you'll be able to check your watch.
