How / when did you discover Dealmac?
#61
Wow... I remember ValueAmerica!
I remember getting nearly $100 (I think) of "Value Dollars", and buying a video card and, uh, something else... processor upgrade? for my 8500. Ended up costing me less than $50, IIRC.
Naturally, after that, I didn't shop at ValueAmerica again since I didn't have any "Value Dollars" of free money any more...
Sure enough, they went under.. just like almost everyone predicted.

I guess it's not anyone's idea of fun but mine.... amazing how much sharper people's memories were only 6 years ago.

Yep, 1997. Back in the dealchat days before login was required. Think I came across it on some Usenet posts? This was before MacSurfer linked to Dealmac.

This must've been when I was using my 1st Mac LC 475, before I bought the Motorola Starmax 4000.

Since Dealmac is coming to an end, I thought it might be fun to review how we all got together.

I was shopping for a new computer in 1997 and spent a lot of time on a forum for Power Computing users that was started by the same guy that founded dpreview (which took off right as PCC lost their Apple license and the forum died a little while later)

On that forum, someone mentioned the existence of dealmac and it soon became a daily reader that lasted for YEARS - longer than any other site I can think of...

anyway, how did you discover dealmac (and later the dealmac forum and then this one)?

That story sounds very familiar as I was following the same websites (the Power Computing forum). The Digital camera review site he started at that time was DCResource.com, I remember it very well. I bought my much used and loved Kodak DC4800 based on his very good review of it. I think his name was/is Jeff Keller.
Ah... you're right - I couldn't remember the right camera page, but I do remember that his name was Jeff Keller - he started while still at UCSD (my school) - we chatted a few times...
The OP wasn't completely off. JK agreed to suspend operating Dcresource.com when he took a job working for dpreview.com. I don't know if he is still there, but it does bring back memories. I enjoyed his test shots taken on the Stanford Campus and around the Bay Area.

I too had multiple Power Computing machines. They were great for consumers, but not so good for a struggling Apple Computer Co.
