Uber in NYC
#1
My wife and I will be spending a long weekend in NY in a couple of weeks. Taking the train from Boston to Penn Station. Our hotel will be farther than a walk away, so I'm thinking of using Uber for a ride to the hotel. I've used them in Boston a few times and was very pleased. Should I expect anything different in NYC? I know they use dynamic pricing based on availability, but other than that, are prices likely to vary much from Boston? I'm assuming I can throw a couple of suitcases in the car that picks us up. Anything else?

Works great. The car that picks you up will almost certainly have room for a couple of suitcases. "Anything else," you ask? You mean, will it fit a dead body or two as well? That I'm not so sure of, it might not be like Boston in that respect.

I just used both Uber and Lyft while on vacation (a lot of drivers drive for both). Here's a tip: after you sign up and get the new user credit from each service, have your wife sign up using your referral codes. This way you both get the new user credits as well as the referral credits. My wife and I both had a $30 new user credit we used for long rides and when she signed up for Lyft, somehow she got 10 $10 credits so we only payed for tipping in Lyft (not mandatory but we like to tip them) and ended up paying very little on our trip. :wiggle:

NYC has an embarrassment of taxi riches. We just used the regular NYC taxis and thought that the service, pricing, and payment methods were fine.

Agreed, unless it's raining when they arrive, then taxis are nowhere to be found. If you are arriving on a weekday, the Penn Station area is a madhouse with commuters, tourists and traffic. I see tons of Uber cars in the city. It's quite popular here.

Thanks for your thoughts. One thing I really like about Uber (haven't tried Lyft) is that no money changes hands. My credit card is on file and I text, wait, get in and go and get out with a 'thank you' when I arrive at my destination

tenders, the 'anything else' was more of an "anything else I need to know?" Smile.

Good idea, Mactel. I'll give that some strong thought.

Wurm,

No need for Uber. Either the subway or a plain ol' NYC taxi will be fine. The transportation of choice is dependent on how much luggage you have and how far you need to go from Penn to get to the hotel. If you're going to spend the entire time in NYC and won't be lugging bags and such around, get a Metro card and use the subway.

One of the reasons I moved from NYC was watching 500 taxis whiz past me while my raised arm atrophied. Might still live there if they had Lyft and Uber in those days. Taxis are going to die. They can just drive Uber. May they rest in Peace.

I'll opt for the subway before a taxi. My wife discovered something called HopStop and that gave us step-by-step (or stop-by-stop) directions for the subway. We're staying at the Downtown Marriot.
