many (most?) apps on the Mac app store no longer support Snow Leopard
I'm a little confused. Why would the OS on my computer affect what apps I can buy? Don't those run on a completely separate CPU (my phone)?

I fail to understand why someone would be using an OS that is five generations old. If you are running SL, you are at least using an Intel Mac and a newer OS will install on it. You may not be able to use El Capitan, but surely you can move up to Lion or Mountain Lion.

No, having an Intel Mac does not mean you can automatically install a newer OS. Just ask the woman who owns an iMac stuck on SL.

Intel Core Duos like my BlackBook are stuck at OS 10.6.8.
And any Mac that can run Mountain Lion can run El Capitan (yes assuming you have 2GB RAM installed), so there's no need to stop at 10.8.x. If you don't like the UI changes, at least going to Mavericks gives a UI experience not totally different than OS 10.5+.

SL's the last OS that will run FreeHand, which was my bread and butter for many years. I still spend about 15 percent of my working time in it. However, it's less of a need with each passing year, and the new roomier SSD raises the possibility of running a VM for the occasional need.

Snow Leopard for PPC applications.
I'm getting ready to move to 10.9.5 (IMHO the first decent version after 10.6.8), but will keep SL via Parallels or other emulator.
