(Re)New(ed) MacBook Pro in da house!
#1
Thanks, Speedy, for the tip: 15.4" MBP Retina early 2013 Refurb $1105 on Woot.

This seemed like a good deal, and my Mid-Late 2007 MacBookPro3,1 (2.6GHz Core2Duo, 6GB RAM, upgraded to 256GB SSD) has been getting flakier and flakier lately, so I pulled the trigger on this machine.

Got a silent upgrade (2.7 GHz Core i7 rather than 2.4GHz), and so far 8GB seems like enough RAM for me. The internal SSD is quite zippy, and the Retina display is gorgeous. I'll have to adapt to having just 256GB internal storage (old MBP had a 750GB platter drive in the optical bay), and it's weird to have so few ports, but I like the HDMI out and may spring for the Thunderbolt dock from our sponsor at some point. Just for kicks, I installed Windows 10 in Boot Camp. I hate Windows, but if I ever need it it's quite fast.

I feel like I got my money's worth out of the 3,1 (a refurb bought in 2008) and am happy that my subsequent laptop is a 10,1. Anyway, just wanted to share the joy with my MRF family!

Edit: P.S. It's running El Capitan perfectly - my old machine was still on Mavs...

If you can deal with slower, convenient storage, and your MBP has an SD card slot, think about getting an SD adapter, with a micro-SD card in it. I got one of these for my MBA, and I LOVE it. No problems at all.

One warning--make sure you get one that fits your specific machine. Apparently different manufacturers/models vary in size, and some work in MBAs but not in MBPs.

Thanks! I'll look into that....

FYI the Samsung Pro and Sandisk Extreme Pro are among the best for transfer rates at 80-95 MB/sec. And their small file transfer rates (usually hideously slow on SD-class cards, e.g: 1/10 the speed of HDDs or worse) are at least respectable, being similar to a 7200 RPM HD.
