Configuring Mail 7.3
#1
Mail 4.6 displays mail in a full-width main window, with the Mailboxes in the leftmost narrow column. The vertical dimension of the main window is adjustable from full page to just a few mails at the top. Clicking on a particular mail in the main window displays its message in the lower part of the main window.

Mail 7.3 displays mail in an adjustable narrow column window, with the Mailboxes in the leftmost narrow column. The vertical dimension of mail is not adjustable—it occupies the full vertical screen. Contents of the selected mailbox appear in a second full-height vertical column. Name of sender, subject, and the first line of messages fill this full vertical column. Clicking on a particular mail in the second vertical window displays its message in the third column. With two vertical columns devoted to mailboxes and lists of messages reduces the horizontal dimension of the actual message display window.

Is there a way to configure Mail 7.3 to present a display like its 4.6 counterpart? I checked the menus and struck out…

Devoting that second full-height vertical column to mail wastes horizontal space…

Go to Preferences->Viewing and select 'Use classic layout' and see if that helps.

Personally, I don't like the split display in the right-hand window, so I click on the little window divider that separates the list from the message window, and drag it all the way to the bottom, leaving just the list of messages. To view an individual message, I double-click its list entry, and it opens in a new, separate window.

Anyhow, see if the classic layout option gives you what you need.

That's it! Thanks!

I had found it once before, then forgot it…
