Best OS for 7,1 MBP?

I plan on upgrading my brothers laptop as a birthday present. Installing more RAM. 8gb...maybe 16. Plus an SSD. I figured I'd go ahead and update his OS while I was at it. I looked on Apple's site and apparently you can put EC on the 7,1.

EC seems stable now, so go for it. That's a nice upgrade you have planned.

Ram has never been cheaper, but if he needs a bigger SSD (500 GB) id spend the money there before more ram. =)

I'm running OS 10.11 on a 13" 2010 MacBook Pro (MacBookPro7,1). Seems to work fine. I did put 16 GB in it, but not yet an SSD, as I had a Seagate 500GB hybrid drive on hand.
