FU: installing formatting OS Sierra on External Drive so that it boots.

Ordered drive from OWC on Tuesday, and it arrived today Saturday. Illinois, to Southern California, with USPS.

I followed the instructions above, Formatted as described... Then chose the install Sierra, and chose the external drive, then went to reboot, and all I get is the thermometer on the screen, with my external monitor just giving an occasional flicker.

Are you sure that it will be a bootable install of OS Sierra?, Before I erased after this first try, the contents didn't look right.... More like it is the files to Install OS Sierra.

Searched and found this.....

Needed to be more patient with thermometer of progress

This time I walked away and it is 1/3 of the way across saying 10 minutes to go on install of is sierra on this external 500 gig

I'm not sure what happened when you first ran the installer app; I just installed Sierra on an external drive using the normal method: run the installer app, tell it which drive to install the OS on, and let it run. I didn't have to do anything out of the ordinary. The "imore" page seems to be mostly about making a bootable installer.

Learn patience! Start all over, and when it is finished, you will be presented with a Welcome screen in many languages. THAT TIME is when you click your mouse and start setting up your Mac. It will take the better part of an hour on the fastest drive and more on spinning drives.

OK, Sierra is called MacOS, but 10.11.6 is still called OS X, not MacOS.

Why is 10.11.6 labeled macOS in the screenshot above?

When you are booted into Sierra, everything is called macOS. When you are booted into any OS prior to 10.12, everything is called OS X. Hope you can adjust.
