Cause of MBP heat stroke?
#11
Buzz wrote: After a fresh cold reboot, w/ no reason for the optical bay drive to be accessed, the heat ramps up. It's almost as if the current heat wave somehow triggers the optical bay drive into heating up.

I pulled my HD and replaced the optical drive in my 2008 MBP after experiencing much the same thing.

Best to just get a big SSD vs keeping the HD in the optical bay.

The MBP is not designed to deal with the heat from a HD in that bay.

Doc-
Anecdotally, the OEM 7200RPM drive in the old MBP got pretty warm, whereas the 750GB 5400RPM pull from the newer MBP never got nearly as warm in its original MBP, so I hoped it would be a safe choice for the optical bay. Until the current heat wave, the setup was fine, but as noted, when the ambient temps in the room get to a certain level, it's like the MBP flips its 'hot' switch. When you confirm, "The MBP is not designed to deal with the heat from a HD in that bay." That's pretty much what I was asking "why" about. Thanks.
