I have developed a couple of websites/web-based businesses (Software as a service or SaaS) over the years. Usually would put energy into them for a while and then get tired of doing them, or just got busy doing other things and never fully marketed them long term.
Well, I realized a month or so ago that I hadn't touched one of them for maybe 3+ years. So, I decided to see if there was a reasonably easy way to sell it. I don't have contacts of anyone that would want it locally, so after checking out several online auction services, i decided to try http://www.flippa.com
Listed my site/service a week or so ago, paid $29 for the listing fee for the auction. Ended within the past couple of days, and ended up getting $X00 for it (where the X equals more than 3 but under 8, in case you get curious and try to figure out what I sold by browsing the listings). They do take a 12-15% cut (depending on how you facilitate the payment), but for the service they provide and the amount of activity on the marketplace, that seems like an OK fee.
The payment is still in escrow, but I've given all the site info and files to the buyer and it seems like things will complete as planned. I would have loved to get more for it, but what i got was more than just letting the site rot away and give me a big fat zero. I have another site/service that I'm going to sell soon that I think will bring a higher price. If you look at the listings, you can definitely see what sort of things do sell well...there are certain categories that don't really bring much and wouldn't be justified by the listing or selling fees.
Just thought I'd share my experience. Perhaps someone else here has similar assets that would be worth selling...
