A driver was spotted on Monday cruising down the road in Zhengzhou with his elderly mother sitting in the back -- in an open trunk.
After the images went viral online, the driver surnamed Li revealed to reporters that his family was returning from a crowded dinner date that was designed to set his brother up with a potential bride.
Following the dinner, Li offered everyone a ride back home... but then realized that he wasn't going to be able to fit everyone in his car.
To solve the problem, Li suggested to his mother that she wait at the restaurant and he would return to pick her up. Instead, his mother countered that since they live so close by, she could simply sit in the trunk.
Li agreed to his mother's idea. Now, he says he wishes he hadn't after becoming the target of online outrage.
However, Li's mom has stuck up for his son, saying that he has been unfairly demonized and that he's actually a very good son.

What's the big deal? I too would put the old lady in the trunk. At least he left the lid open!

That was his mistake actually. A sudden change in acceleration could cause the lid to move down and hit her on the head.
