I've been pretty bad about this myself, especially with PDFs. I really need to make sense of the staggering number of PDFs I've collected. There's a lot of discussion on the interwebs about these type of apps. People who used to like them have decided they're archaic now. Others still like them. YMMV. I think the upside to these kind of apps is that you can assign more than one keyword to each file, making them more "findable".
