Is this because of my Apple router?
#1
I wanted to move some video - a DVD rip of 4.54 GB - from my iMac to my MBP.

The iMac is hooked up via ethernet to a gigabit switch, and the laptop was connecting via wireless.

It took 20 minutes to the transfer. I could have done this far more quickly via a thumb drive connected to the USB 2 port on the iMac. Crazy!

Is this somehow because of the Airport Express? I get very fast downloads via wireless from the internet.

If this is normal, should I get a thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter for these kinds of transfers? This should of course get the router out of the picture.

Probably not.

Assuming 240 Mb/s which is half the rated speed of USB 2...this is 30 MB/s.

4.54 GB is 4540 MB.

4540 MB/30 MB/sec = 151 seconds transfer time.

I get this speed all the time.

I hear ya, but really, give it a try. USB 2 sticks are silly slow.

In my days pre USB 3, I would just use a portable HDD. very fast.

But yes, this could be a limitation of your router or wifi on the mac or imac, without knowing their specs, hard to put a pin in it.

When it comes to networking:

Wired = Speed/Reliability.
Wireless = Convenience.

If you have a really good USB stick, you might get the 240 speed. A cheap one might be dog slow, though.

Yes, it's the WiFi.

I have an older MBP that can't do 802.11ac. Moving more than a few hundred MB over the network from it over WiFi is go-get-a-coffee time.

My iPhone 6s moves data 10x faster over my network. I've timed it.

I routinely move video files of 3gb+ from my MBP to a server via Airport extreme. It takes about 7-10 minutes. If I have 3 or more files, I'll generally just move them with a thumb drive or plug the server in, done in 30 seconds.
