Help please: is this monitor switching setup possible?
#1
Help please: Is what I'm asking for even possible? My normal setup is a Mac Pro mid-2010 2.8 quad core connected to an Apple Cinema Display 23" aluminum A1082. There's a mini display port/DVI adapter between the display and the Mac Pro.

For certain projects I bypass the Mac Pro entirely and connect the same monitor (using the same adapter) to a MBPr 15", late 2013. In these instances I utilize both the laptop monitor and the ACD (while editing video, for example).

So my burning question is this: is there a switch box or cable that will allow me switch the monitor between the Mac Pro and the MBPr? Again, it's only the monitor that I want to switch. Thanks in advance.

There is an HDMI to DVI adapter.

They make HDMI switches, and they make DVI to HDMI cables. So I think it can be done.

So, for example: connect monitor to an HDMI switcher via a DVI-to-HDMI adapter...then connect switcher to MBPr via HDMI. But how would I go from the switcher to the Mac Pro tower? Would have to go from HDMI to mini display port, right?

Forget the HDMI, use a mini-display port to DVI adapter on the MBPr (i.e., Thunderbolt), and use a DVI switch to get to the display:

Thunderbolt supports DVI (scroll down):

Potential cable:

Potential switch:

You might need to get another/different cable depending on what male/female ends you need. Basically, convert both computers to DVI, then switch that to get to the display.

I believe this might be the ticket! Thanks.

If you do buy HDMI cables and switches, that may be a more flexible solution at some point in the future. You could reuse the switch for a TV set for example.
