I want to be able to have a different background than black... and I want to give it a set time.
iPhoto will only let you do black... but will let you set time.
Bridge will let you set background, but not time.
iMovie is too confusing...

Keynote?
Or will iPhoto let you use an image behind the slideshow image?

Try vintage prints theme in Photos or iPhoto, the background is your other photos in black and white.
Keynote will let you customize everything, but it is more work.

Is there a reason you want to avoid PowerPoint?

Its the Devils work, like most of Office, and I dont own it. =)
Honestly, I never even condisdered Keynote, figured it would be easier than having to use a dedicated slideshow app.
Its 24 images that I want to run, with a simple crossfade, no music, but with a gray/white background. For some reason I thought it would be easier...
thanks all

Stare at iMovie until you figure it out (it will take you no longer than five minutes). It's REALLY easy and you can create exactly what you want with it.
