I put in about 5,000 miles a year on my car, although I take metro to work everyday so it's more of a weekend car and for running errands. It has about 118,000 miles on it now, as an 87' Toyota, and I expect it to last for a good while longer. So far the only major repairs (over $400) needed are the ones I've caused to happen. It's nice not having a monthly car payment, I just pay that amount into an ING savings account so if I ever need to get a new car I know I'll have the money.

[quote davester][snip] I wouldn't touch a used car with more than about 60k miles on it (unless it was a vintage car)...the best years of the cars life are coming to an end at that point and the years of troublesome repairs will be coming up in a few 10s of 1000s of miles.
It depends upon the car. I remember my mechanic's comment when I turned 100k miles on my '94 Corolla. He said "Hell, it's just getting broken in."

Insurance gives us a break for less than 7500 a year.
Knew someone who was a caddy in the PGA -- 36K per year (for each of the 4 years they did it).

I pretty much walk where ever I need to go. I work from home. Wife works a few blocks away. Still I drive about 12k/yr. In January I'll probably drive to San Diego and back. That's about 2600 miles round trip.
