Some follow up, if folks are interested. The drug testing lab that I have access to did their analysis. They didn’t have a method for the exact drug, just a related one, which gave a similar result from both the generic I felt was effective and the one that didn’t seem to be. They mentioned that the binders in the pills may be different and this may affect absorption (bioavailability).

Since we were snowed in this weekend and I thus had nothing critical on my schedule (and was more or less house-bound anyway), I gave the seemingly-ineffective generic another try. It’s still ineffective, as far as I can tell.

At this point I haven’t decided whether to try to pursue further testing. There does seem to be urine testing done elsewhere for eszopiclone, which would give some indication as to whether I was absorbing the one generic at all, but this would be on my dime. I’ll let you know if I decide to try to take this further.
