I get it hal. I just happen to have only one PCI equipped computer handy right now. That Power Mac 7600. I'll test things further in a bit. I have a client's machine that I'll probably have to rebuild from scratch any day now. I'll test the two components together in that system since it is a relatively new Windows box. Good thing the card supports Windows as well, makes testing a wee bit easier.
I just got caught with my pants down as I parted out my old Linux Celeron box, but didn't keep the replacement slightly newer AMD box as I configured it for a client who was having computer trouble. That left me with the Power Mac 7600 or the towers I have in storage (not an option to get to right now). Your method would make the most sense.

I second the notion of getting a dirt-cheap Smurf or low-end G4.
I have a serial ATA card and drive in my G4/450 and it works really well. However, it's an earlier drive (250GB Hitachi). I'm thinking of putting an SATA card into my home Smurf as well.

First off - until recently, the version of SIIG card was both OS 9 and PCI v2.1 compatible... about a year or so ago they changed to a new revision which is not OS 9 compatible and does not work in systems older than B&W G3s reliably.
It was actually a surprise 'oh by the way' change on their part.... If you're SIIG card is working - then - it's the older version and not the new version.
As for our SATA card - it's listed compatible with the Blue & White G3 and later only (...and PCs with PCI 2.2 compliant slot available) because it is NOT reliable with prior Macs that do not have PCI 2.2 compliant slots. We did test and verify - and if it was ok for prior makes, we'd list it for them. It's actually hard anymore to get the chipsets for PCI 2.1 support that mesh with the other components for current stuff.
If you have the SIIG card that is ok - go back to that for the old the Beige G3 or 7600... and move the SATA card to something B&W G3 or later... or return it. The square peg not going to fit in that round hole. sorry.

I agree, Sawtooth is a good idea. I would pay $25 for one without RAM or hard drive. I have the appropriate RAM modules and some spare hard drives. I'll have to keep my eyes open. I know there are deals out there. A Sawtooth or Gigabit Ethernet G4 would be perfect.
OWC Larry,
Thanks again for the support. I would be much obliged if you would let me clear the air again. I'm neither completely surprised nor upset the OWC 2+2 card doesn't work with my 7600. I was confused that the bridged PATA drive does sort of work, but the SATA drive would not at all. I did some research and then thought I would ask the question. That's all. Sorry things turned weird.
Thanks again.
