How many of you parroting the meaningless "organized" labor slogans have actually worked any of the major unions from inside their business office?
The people who work for the unions that I work with in DC are with rare exception the best, kindest, most generous and selfless people I've ever met. Yes, yes, both of them are a rare exception, they rescue stray puppies, daily they snatch big eyed orphans from burning buildings, cut fishing nets entangling sea turtles barely struggling for their last breath and rescue baby seals from club welding, blood lusting, wild eyed Canucks...
The workers at the core of each of these unions believe that they make the world a better place. They believe that the members of their unions live better lives and have more just outcomes thanks to their work. They understand that they have responsibilities towards their members and that there are families who depend upon the good work that they do. One of the benefits of working for a union is that they can often see/experience outcomes from their labors so they know that they're helping people.
And yes, they go above-and-beyond, providing for the indigent and promoting basic human rights. They collect food and clothing and books and school supplies for the poor. They march to support principled government. They mourn collectively when our government does not work for the benefit of the people of this nation.
I've met a few unlikeable people in union offices (a few managers), but even those people are dedicated to their jobs and their employees and try to help where they can do so.
Labor unions are good and the people at the heart of our labor unions who keep the parts moving -- those who you probably never see -- are good and honorable people who deserve better than your sarcasm and misguided attempts at wit.
