Excluded Drivers?
#11
We used this all the time with Progressive when our kids were teens and at college - they didn't need to be insured drivers when they were at school, only when they were home and driving our cars. So we could easily take them on and off the policy anytime, just with a phone call. It saved a lot of money.

Here in Cali (DUI's aside) w/ mandatory insurance laws, other adult drivers in the household are usually listed as potential drivers, but are not surcharged for your policy if/when they also have their own insurance for their own vehicle(s). Of course those "first accident forgiveness", and "newer car replacement" policies aren't sold here, so insurance quirks vary state by state. Though as Fill says, rental car insurance is a different animal, and is an optional coverage on your regular policy, which creates several possible layers when you rent, that may include automatic spouse coverage. That rental car stuff requires an advanced degree to understand, especially if crossing state lines.

That is exactly how I pick my girlfriends, their ability to handle a manual...
