"Leahy Sets ‘Memogate’ Trap for Kavanaugh"
#1
' In a surprise move, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) challenged Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court, over “Memogate,” an obscure 2003 scandal that could engulf Kavanaugh’s nomination, during Wednesday’s marathon confirmation hearing.

The scandal, largely forgotten today, involved two Republican congressional staffers stealing confidential memoranda from Senate Judiciary Committee computers and turning them over to GOP interest groups. It remains unknown whether the White House—where Kavanaugh was deputy White House counsel—also received the memos. In his 2006 confirmation hearing, and again this week, Kavanaugh swore that he did not.

But on Wednesday, Leahy suggested that the Senate Judiciary Committee has in its possession six emails that directly contradict Kavanaugh’s sworn testimony—which would mean he twice committed perjury. '

And the Republicans won't care (It won't surprise me if they try to rule Leahy out of order)

Has anyone at the hearings brought up Kavanaugh's being a proponent for the conspiracy theory that Vince Foster was assassinated by the Clinton's while he was part of Ken Starr's group 20 years ago? Multiple investigations before that had concluded it was suicide, but according to an article I ran across he insisted on reinvestigating Foster's death and that was about $2 million of what Starr spent.

Edit: Found the NY Time opinion piece I read first - https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/05/opini...oster.html

Kamala Harris also asked a question that Kavanaugh danced around.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), who on Tuesday attempted to delay the hearing, asked Kavanaugh if he discussed Special Counsel Robert Mueller or his Russia investigation with anyone from Kasowitz Benson Torres, the law firm founded by Trump’s personal attorney, Marc Kasowitz. Kavanaugh was at a loss for words.

None of this matters. Even if Kavanaugh killed Vince Foster, he would be confirmed. Republicans have no shame.

The most interesting part to me was the questioning about why he was the nominee, and if his refusal to allow the 17 year old girl in an immigrant detention facility to have an abortion was his "audition" for the role. That ruling made no sense and did seem much more political than a matter of legal principle.

FTFY.
