Another "family values" Republican behaving badly
#1
This involves more details about what Rep. Duncan Hunter (CA) was spending his campaign funds on:

The 47-page [indictment]...says the five-term Republican from Alpine had “personal relationships” with five unnamed individuals.

For example:

Hunter had his campaign pay a $1,008 tab at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino “for food, drinks and three nights lodging during a personal ski trip with Individual 14,” the indictment states.

Hey, it was just a bro's ski trip, right?

Hunter [also] $121.34 in campaign funds at the Birchmere Music Hall for food and beer while attending a concert with Individual 14, Congressman A, and Congressman A's date

Uh, they were good friends?

Hunter’s campaign spending on behalf of Individual 14 lasted more than a year, including “driving his car on a 468-mile trip to Virginia Beach” and “a personal stay at the Liaison Capitol Hill” in the first half of 2011, the indictment claims.

Really, really good friends?

Hunter's lawyer helpfully explains:

“The supposed reason given for including these details is that they reflect spending of campaign funds for extramarital infidelities and excessive drinking.

According to Vega’s letter, prosecutors told the defense that they have pictures of indiscretions.

“While there may be evidence of infidelity, irresponsibility or alcohol dependence, once properly understood, the underlying facts do not equate to criminal activity,"

"Properly understood"? Remember how Hunter initially said it was all his wife's fault? One can't help but wonder how the indictment, which cites not one, but 5 (!) individuals benefiting from Duncan Hunter's tender attentions (and campaign fund spending) will play with the "family values" crowd?

You already know, don't you?

While some Hunter constituents are second-guessing their support, others told The San Diego Union-Tribune they were certain to vote for him in November regardless of the criminal charges.

Once again, this "family values" schtick is really a sham on both sides of the GOP candidate-voter equation.

Yep, the more "personal relationships " he had, the more votes he'll get.

Unfortunately, this is likely to be the case. Some voters in that rural and dark red district have never voted for anyone who was not named Duncan Hunter… The opponent has a good message, and he's closed the gap to about 7 or 8 points, but with any trial likely to be pushed until after the election, he'll need more than these allegations to close the rest of the gap. Hunter is probably not a crook, but he is certainly felony stupid. His wife just came along for the ride.

There are several interesting threads in this case which will end up coming out if it goes to trial:

1) Wife's free-spending ways;
2) Duncan's dalliances; and
3) Duncan's multiple dismissals of his accounting staff's pleas to take the Pcard away from his wife.

There are also some interesting actors which may end up having to testify - several congresscroooks, and a host of other political toadies and stooges.

Might even be worth taking the trolley downtown to watch this circus live - if it happens!
