i was hoping someone would have an effective longterm suggestion.
Such a solution has been mentioned several times.
It's the site serving up the ads you're seeing.
I'm guessing ESPN is subletting ad space and may not know what's happening. If they do, then they obviously don't care. Or there may be some malware on their site that's the problem.
As long as they're allowing hosting for sketchy ads, an ad blocker, and keeping it up to date is you're only recourse.
However, some sites don't like them and won't reveal content until you whitelist them or turn the blocker off. A bit of a pain, that. It's possibly less of one than dealing with the ad.
It's never occurred to me to check for a Reader Mode in iOS Safari, but it gets me by the 'Please don't block..' in macOS Safari.
