Sometimes I use Liquid Plumber to clear up a slow drain. I used one last weekend. I open the bottle and try to pour, about 1/2 oz comes out and then it stops. I squeeze the bottle and eventually I get it flowing again. There was a SOLID cap that was preventing the flow, it looked like wax. It was not really solid and eventually went down the drain as well, but it was way more solid than the rest of the bottle.
Anyway, I poured about 1/5 of the bottle as per instructions, and 15 min later flushed with hot water and drain is fine once again. I will probably repeat this in about a year or two. I suspect this happens because the stuff gets old? maybe if I bought a fresh bottle and used it right away it would not have this solid component?
