Apple May Buy Intel's Cellular Modem Division

Bloomberg - wrote:
Apple Inc. is negotiating to buy Intel Corp.’s struggling cellular modem unit, said a person familiar with the matter.

A deal would give Apple key engineering talent and patents that would help it develop new devices to connect to the mobile internet. The Intel assets could be valued at about $1 billion in a transaction, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the matter was private.

An agreement could be reached as soon as this week, though it’s possible talks could break down without a deal, the person said.

"a person familiar"; geez I hope this Bloomberg reporters' source wasn't a barista

Why would they do that? Qualcomm modems have consistently been better in every way than Intel modems. Why buy a company that makes an inferior product?

Because Qualcomm has been behaving badly and Apple hates being a hostage. Both the US and EU governments have been on them for monopoly behavior.

Intel was not as good, but they were in the mix. I presume Apple thinks they can make something of the Intel portfolio in a couple of years, or at least give them a bit of leverage.

Maybe Apple has picked up some unique IP that could advance Intel designs for the young and quickly expanding 5G market. I think Apple would partner with Chinese manufacturers to elbow Qalcomm out of the market, the current state of the Intel modem deal seems to be putting pressure on their stock price.
