burning from Finder
#1
I downloaded a .dmg file from a website in order to burn a CD of it for backup purposes. However, Burn Disc wasn't available from the Finder or from Disk Utility until I double-clicked and mounted the image on the desktop. Is that the way it's always been and does that makes sense? I guess I don't "get" the .dmg thing after all.

When you have a Finder window selected:

Go to "View"
Go to "Customize Toolbar"

Select the Burn Icon from there.
You should be able to burn any file, folder selected within the finder window.

adding to this:
The finder tells you to drag files to the CD icon on the desktop to burn the file.

I guess it depends if you want to make the .dmg file mount when the disc is inserted or you are just trying to make a copy of the .dmg file to transfer to another computer.

use Disk Utility, then you have to choose the image and then you can burn, i don't think you have to mount it, but I repeat, you do have to open it in disk utility. it should appear below the hard drives, then click on it and burn away. Mounting is not necessary I think.

A DMG is just a package that contains the information. Kind of like a .SIT file. You have to do something to it before you can do anything with it. I know that is simplistic, but by mounting the DMG and burning that, you are getting a copy of everything in the "package" for a backup.

Thanks, all. I ended up burning it from Disk Utility, but it wasn't available as a burnable item until I mounted it.

Macartist, I'll have to try what you suggested tomorow, as I'm at work now. Thanks.

Apple's prescribed method http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006

[quote Apple - ]
Mac OS X 10.3 or later

1. Open Disk Utility. It's in the Utilities folder (/Applications/Utilities).
2. If the disk image you want to use doesn't appear in the list, drag its icon to the Disk Utility window.
3. Select the disk image and click Burn.
4. Insert a blank CD or DVD into your computer's disc drive and follow the prompts

Also, here is a free 10.4 burning program I downloaded but haven't used just yet:
